HIGHLIGHTS
The eleventh annual Boston Book Festival took place on October 18–20. That’s right—the BBF was a full weekend for the first time ever, with Saturday events taking place in Copley Square and Sunday sessions happening in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood.
Before the big weekend, we hosted a citywide #BBFBookHunt featuring photo clues for BBF 2019 authors’ books, shared on Twitter and Instagram during the lead-up to the festival on October 14 through 16. On Friday, October 18, we were also pleased to work with the Wondermore organization on not one but two author visits (do you detect a theme here?) as part of this year’s Shelf Help partnership, which also helped build the library collections at two Boston Public Schools. Debut author Charlotte Nicole Davis visited TechBoston Academy in Dorchester and author/illustrator Brendan Wenzel visited Orchard Gardens School in Roxbury, where he was surprised and delighted by a school orchestra performance of a musical piece inspired by one of his books!
Official BBF festivities kicked off Friday evening with a kickoff keynote featuring former US Ambassador Samantha Power‘s recent memoir, The Education of an Idealist. Power’s inspirational conversation with Nicco Mele was the perfect start to BBF weekend.
In contrast to 2018’s rain-soaked festivities, 2019’s BBF weekend was an autumnal stunner, and attendees flocked to Copley Square on Saturday for Day 1 of the BBF. 75 exhibitors, food trucks, Berklee College of Music performers, the C-SPAN BookTV bus, and a half-dozen costume characters joined thousands of happy attendees in Copley Square Park.
Likewise, on Sunday, hundreds of attendees flocked to the Dewitt Center, the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building, Dudley Square Cafe, and Frugal Bookstore in Roxbury’s historic Dudley Square, where they perused more than a dozen exhibitor tables, took part in a street art walking tour, enjoyed an African drumming performance, and searched for Waldo.
“Connections” was the theme of BBF 2019, and readers and writers connected at nearly 150 separate sessions over two days, including keynotes by Reginald Dwayne Betts, David W. Blight, Ben Crump, Akwaeke Emezi, Jasmine Guillory, Erin Entrada Kelly, Marie Lu, and Elizabeth Strout. Nonfiction sessions on immigration, capitalism, memoir, and the environment were especially popular, as was an appreciation of the comic strip Peanuts. Sessions on motherhood, war, immigration, and Boston-set mysteries satisfied the fiction fans in the crowd, and poetry sessions co-sponsored with Mass Poetry and featuring Robert Pinsky, Nick Flynn, Morgan Parker, and others were all standing-room only. Festivalgoers also had the opportunity to connect with one another at writing workshops and at not one but two discussions focused on 2019’s One City One Story selection, “Yvonne” by Emerson MFA student Ciera Burch.
In addition to BBF Unbound sessions featuring nonbinary writers, high school students, picture book authors, and more, we welcomed sessions developed by the Mystery Writers of America, Massachusetts Center for the Book, Christian Science Monitor, the Stone Foundation/MAAH, and PEN America, as well as three sessions featuring French and French Canadian authors at the French Cultural Center and four sessions featuring German authors and translators sponsored by the Goethe-Institut Boston.
As usual, there was plenty to keep kids and teens busy all weekend at the BBF. Many families attended picture book readings by award-winning authors and illustrators, participated in panel discussions, took part in STEM and arts hand-on workshops and activities, and enjoyed creative activities on identity and on urban planning, facilitated by Wee the People and 826 Boston. On Sunday, kids had the opportunity to create their own comic strip, build a mobile of the universe, and even make wearable pins.
If BBF Year 11 is any indication, the Boston Book Festival’s second decade will just keep more exciting and rewarding for authors and readers alike. Thanks to everyone–our donors, volunteers, sponsors, board members, partners, presenters, and attendees–for making BBF 2019 the best one yet. You can visit an online collection of photos from BBF 2019 to relive the weekend anytime!
